Two of the biggest names in Christian homeschool curriculum, and families switching between them is common. Abeka emphasizes drill, repetition, and a brisk pace across every subject. BJU Press (Bob Jones) emphasizes critical thinking and analytical reasoning within a Biblical framework. Both cover all subjects PK through 12th grade.
Abeka moves faster and assigns more daily work. Students who thrive with routine and volume do well with it. BJU Press goes deeper on fewer problems, asking students to analyze and evaluate rather than just recall. Its science curriculum in particular is considered more academically rigorous. If you want your child to memorize efficiently and cover a lot of ground, Abeka is the workhorse. If you want your child to think critically from a Biblical worldview, BJU Press invests more in that skill.
