Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) is the most rigorous math curriculum available for middle and high school students. Founded by Richard Rusczyk, a former Math Olympiad winner, AoPS teaches mathematics the way mathematicians actually think — through discovery, proof, and creative problem-solving rather than memorization and formula application.
The textbooks (Pre-Algebra through Calculus and beyond) are written to challenge the top 5-10% of math students. Each section begins with problems that students attempt before being shown the solution method, building genuine mathematical reasoning. The problems are hard , intentionally so. Students are expected to struggle, and the struggle is where the learning happens.
AoPS also offers online courses ($200-500 per course) with live, interactive class sessions taught by experienced instructors. The online community includes forums where students discuss problems, compete in challenges, and develop a peer group of other math-loving kids , something that's hard to find locally.
For younger students, Beast Academy (grades 2-5) provides a gateway into the AoPS approach at an age-appropriate level. The transition from Beast Academy to AoPS pre-algebra is smooth.
AoPS is not a general-purpose math curriculum. Students who find standard math difficult or unpleasant will likely be frustrated, and homeschool parents who want a traditional, structured progression may find the approach unfamiliar. But for mathematically talented students , kids who finish their grade-level work easily and crave deeper challenges , AoPS provides an intellectual environment that most schools simply cannot match. Many AoPS students go on to competitive math, elite universities, and STEM careers.
