All-in-One Curriculum — Unit Studies · Charlotte Mason — Books — Neutral
Five in a Row is one of the most cherished homeschool programs for young children. The concept is elegantly simple: choose a high-quality picture book, read it aloud every day for five days, and each day explore a different subject through the lens of that story. Monday might focus on geography, Tuesday on art, Wednesday on science, and so on.
The program comes in volumes, each containing lesson plans for roughly 20 picture books. The books are widely available at libraries, keeping costs minimal. The teacher manual provides discussion questions, activity ideas, and connections to academic subjects, but leaves plenty of room for families to follow rabbit trails and pursue their children's interests.
Five in a Row covers ages 2–4 (Before Five in a Row), ages 4–8 (volumes 1–3), and ages 8–12 (Beyond Five in a Row). The early volumes are purely gentle and exploratory; Beyond FIAR adds more structured academic components.
This is not a rigorous academic program — it's a philosophy of learning through delight that works beautifully for young children. Most families pair it with a separate phonics and math program. The orientation is neutral; families of any worldview can use it comfortably, though a Christian supplement is available.
