Story-BasedDiscussion

Hearth & Story was created by Lindsey Sodano (author of the Pandia Press History Quest series) to fill a gap she saw in the secular homeschool market: a complete, integrated language arts program that was both academically rigorous and aesthetically beautiful. Each grade level weaves together novel studies, grammar instruction, writing practice, spelling, poetry, and vocabulary into a unified thematic experience.

The curriculum is organized around themes that encourage critical thinking. The 5th grade program, for example, centers on 'The Stories We Are Told,' exploring what happens when characters question the assumptions built into their worlds. Students read carefully selected novels, analyze themes, practice grammar in the context of real writing, and engage with poetry chosen to resonate with young minds rather than bore them.

What to Know

At $25–$50 per grade level for the complete digital download, Hearth & Story is one of the most affordable full language arts programs available. Components can also be purchased individually. Free samples of any grade level are available via email, so families can try before committing.

The curriculum currently covers grades 4 through 8, with the creator actively developing additional levels. For secular families who have struggled to find a language arts program that integrates all the components without religious content, Hearth & Story has quickly become a community favorite.
