Math Curriculum — Eclectic · Unschooling — Online — Secular
Khan Academy is a free, nonprofit educational platform offering comprehensive math instruction from basic counting through college-level calculus, statistics, and linear algebra. Founded by Sal Khan in 2008, it has become one of the most widely used educational resources in the world, used by millions of learners worldwide.
For homeschool families, Khan Academy offers a complete math curriculum at no cost. Students watch short video lessons (typically 5–15 minutes), then practice through adaptive exercises that adjust difficulty based on performance. The mastery system tracks which skills a student has learned, which they’re working on, and which need review. Parents can create a coach account to monitor progress across all skills and courses.
The math content is aligned with Common Core standards, which makes it a practical choice for families who may transition back to public school or want their children taking standardized tests. The platform also covers science, history, economics, computing, and SAT/ACT test preparation — all free.
Khan Academy’s biggest strengths are its price (free), its breadth (K through college), and its adaptive practice system. Students can work at their own pace, rewatch lessons as many times as needed, and get immediate feedback on every problem. For self-motivated, independent learners, it can function as a complete math curriculum.
The limitations are real, though. There’s no physical component — no worksheets, no manipulatives, no handwriting practice. The instruction, while clear, is entirely screen-based. And because it’s self-paced with no built-in accountability, some students drift without external motivation. Many homeschool families use Khan Academy as a powerful supplement rather than a standalone: daily Khan practice alongside a primary curriculum like Saxon, Singapore, or Teaching Textbooks.
Khanmigo, the platform’s AI tutor, adds personalized guidance and Socratic questioning for students who need more support. Khan Academy is available as a website and mobile app on all devices.
