Math Curriculum — Charlotte Mason · Eclectic · Montessori — Hybrid — Neutral
Math-U-See is a mastery-based, multi-sensory math curriculum that uses a unique combination of video instruction, physical manipulative blocks, and systematic workbook practice to teach math from kindergarten through calculus. It’s one of the most recommended curricula for visual and kinesthetic learners, and it has a particularly strong reputation among families with children who have learning differences.
The program’s signature feature is its colored manipulative blocks. These plastic blocks represent units, tens, and hundreds through physical size and color, allowing students to literally build math problems with their hands. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, and even algebra concepts become visible and tangible. For students who struggle with abstract numbers on a page, this physical representation can be transformative.
Each level is named with a Greek letter: Primer, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta (elementary), then Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 (renamed from legacy names), Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Students work through levels at their own pace regardless of age or grade — mastery determines advancement, not birthdate.
Lessons follow a consistent pattern: the parent watches Steve Demme’s video instruction first, then teaches the child using the blocks and workbook. Steve Demme’s teaching style is clear, patient, and encouraging. Each lesson focuses on one concept, practiced to mastery before moving on. Workbook pages include both new practice and systematic review.
The cost runs $140–$180 per level for the Universal Set (student workbook, instruction manual, DVD/streaming access, and tests). The manipulative blocks are purchased once and reused across all levels. Used sets are widely available.
Math-U-See’s primary strength is making math accessible to every learner. Its primary weakness is that the mastery approach can leave gaps if a concept was “mastered” but later forgotten. Some families supplement with flash card review or spiral practice from another source. The program is secular in content though the creator is Christian; the math itself contains no religious material.
