MEP Math (Mathematics Enhancement Programme) is a completely free math curriculum developed by the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching at the University of Plymouth in England. It was originally designed to bring the rigor of continental European math education to British schools, and it delivers exactly that — a challenging, conceptually deep program that costs nothing.

The curriculum covers Reception (age 4-5) through Year 11 (age 16), roughly equivalent to American preschool through 10th grade. Lesson plans, worksheets, and answer keys are all available as free PDF downloads from the CIMT website. This program is teacher-led with detailed, scripted lesson plans that walk parents through the instruction.

What to Know

MEP's approach is heavily conceptual. Students are expected to understand why mathematical procedures work, not just execute them. The system introduces topics earlier than most American curricula , multiplication concepts appear in first grade, for example , and builds understanding incrementally through carefully sequenced activities.

The trade-offs are real: the PDFs are plain and functional (no color, no illustrations), the British terminology requires occasional translation (maths, litres, centimetres), and the curriculum assumes a knowledgeable instructor. There's no hand-holding for math-anxious parents. But for families who want a rigorous, free, secular math program and don't mind a no-frills presentation, MEP is an extraordinary resource that's completely overlooked by most of the homeschool community.
