Multi-Age FamiliesStory-Based

Sonlight is a complete, literature-based homeschool curriculum built around the belief that children learn best through great stories. Each year’s program (called a “level”) centers on a historical period and includes dozens of carefully curated books — read-alouds, independent readers, and reference texts — plus a detailed daily Instructor’s Guide that tells you exactly what to read, discuss, and assign each day.

Founded in the 1990s by a homeschooling family with a background in overseas missions who wanted to expose their children to diverse global perspectives, Sonlight is known for choosing books that don’t shy away from complexity. Students read primary sources, historical fiction from multiple viewpoints, biographies, and literature from around the world. The book selections are widely praised as among the best-curated in homeschooling.

What to Know

A typical Sonlight year includes a large box of physical books, a schedule mapping out every day of the school year, discussion questions, activity suggestions, and notes on each reading. Science and math can be added as separate components. Language Arts is integrated through the reading program plus dedicated writing instruction.

Sonlight is Christian, and the Bible curriculum is integrated throughout. However, the academic content engages with real history, real cultural complexity, and real moral questions. Many families appreciate that Sonlight presents diverse perspectives and trusts children to think critically rather than shielding them from difficult topics.

The investment is significant: a full package runs 00–00+ per year. However, the books are yours to keep and reuse with younger siblings, and Sonlight has a buyback program. Many families resell after use, recovering substantial cost.

Sonlight requires moderate parent involvement: daily read-alouds and discussion. But the Instructor’s Guide eliminates lesson planning entirely — you open it each morning and follow the day’s plan. For families who value reading and want a pre-planned, book-rich education, Sonlight delivers an excellent experience. BookShark is the secular alternative using a nearly identical format.
