Visual Latin from Compass Classroom takes a refreshingly lighthearted approach to Latin instruction. Host Dwane Thomas teaches through humor, visual aids, and genuine enthusiasm, making a subject that many students dread into something they actually look forward to. The video lessons are engaging and memorable — students laugh while learning declensions.
The program consists of two levels, each covering a full year of Latin. Level 1 introduces Latin grammar, vocabulary, and translation skills. Level 2 progresses into more complex grammar and begins reading original Latin texts. A typical lesson includes a video lecture (15-20 minutes), practice worksheets, and quizzes.
Visual Latin is available as a subscription ($39/month for all Compass Classroom content) or as a one-time purchase ($150 per level). The subscription includes access to all of Compass Classroom's other courses as well, which can be excellent value.
The curriculum is taught from a Christian perspective , Latin is connected to church history, the Vulgate Bible, and the Western Christian tradition. However, the Latin content itself is standard classical Latin that would prepare students for any further Latin study.
Visual Latin is particularly strong for homeschool families new to Latin who want an accessible entry point. The humor and visual teaching style work well for students who struggle with dry, textbook-based instruction. Families seeking a more rigorous, grammar-intensive Latin program may eventually want to supplement or transition to something like Henle Latin or Wheelock's for upper levels.
