KONOS is a pioneer of the unit studies approach, first published in the 1980s. Each unit is organized around a character trait — attentiveness, obedience, stewardship, orderliness , and weaves together history, science, art, music, and literature around that theme. This approach is intensely hands-on: students build models, conduct experiments, perform skits, cook historical recipes, and engage with material through every sense.
The curriculum is designed for homeschool families with multiple children spanning different ages. All children study the same unit together, with activities naturally differentiating by age , younger children participate at a concrete level while older students analyze and write. This makes KONOS particularly popular with larger families.
KONOS requires significant parent preparation and involvement. The teacher guides provide hundreds of activity ideas per unit, but the parent must select, plan, and gather materials for each week. Families who thrive with KONOS are typically energetic, creative, and comfortable with a flexible schedule.
Math and phonics/reading need to be purchased separately. It is Christian in orientation with character development fundamentally. Three volumes are available at approximately $85–$100 each, with each volume containing multiple units covering roughly a year of instruction.
